Amir Mehmood

SECRETARY/DIRECTOR GENERAL

Message from the Director General

Mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into development planning and enhancing institutional and community capacities for disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.

Natural disasters cause human tragedy, crippling economic losses and hamper development, particularly in developing countries, where human dwellings are vulnerable to natural disasters. These catastrophes cannot be averted but various pre-emptive measures can be adopted to lessen the impact and consequent loss of lives and property.

The disaster management denotes the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular preparedness, response and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disaster.

After the massive October 2005 earthquake, Government of Pakistan established the National Disaster Management Authority at the Federal level and Provincial/State Disaster Management Authorities to provide concentrated relief efforts at State level. Under the supervision of Government of the State of AJ&K, SDMA works closely with government departments both at federal and State levels, the armed forces, UN agencies, and development partners to mobilize, receive, and deploy relief goods and also to devise proactive disaster response plans.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our SDMA employees, members of the concerned line departments, development partners and most of all the people of The State of AJ&K for their unconditional support and encouragement in fortifying our efforts towards securing lives and livelihoods.
